It felt like a classic performance from Dennis Bermudez Saturday night at UFC Fight Night 143 inside the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn. Bermudez once pieced together a seven-fight win streak, including a win over now featherweight champion Max Holloway, using largely his wrestling prowess. 

Following that streak, he dropped six of his next eight and his best days seemed behind him. Bermudez dug deep one last time for his hometown fans, outpointing Te Edwards 30-26 on all judges' scorecards. After the bout, he confirmed what many suspected all along. 

“This is my last fight. It’s been awesome,” Bermudez announced while fighting back tears. “I’ve been through some stuff and thought about hanging them up after the four losses. I want my kids to look back and see that even though I went through adversity, I came out on top.”

Even though it was ideal to go out with a win, Bermudez admits that it was likely the last go-round regardless of the outcome. 

“If I had lost, it was definitely going to be my last fight,” he said. “I doubt they’d sign me back after a five-fight losing streak.” 

And now, for the Long Island native, it’s time for some much needed rest and time with his family. 

"I pushed myself really hard and have been competing since I was in seventh grade. I have two little boys at home,” he said. “The fight game’s tough and I want to be able to see my grandchildren grow up. I just want to take care of myself now. It feels nice to go out on my terms.”
