Shamrock FC 306 brought a stacked fight card live to FloCombat Saturday, June 16, from Kansas City's Ameristar Casino. Here's what went down.
Saturday night, Shamrock FC returned for its unprecedented 306th event, bringing a welterweight headliner between UFC veteran Bobby Voelker (31-13) and Strikeforce veteran Justin DeMoney (15-8-1).
Both fighters were greeted by thunderous applause from the sold-out crowd, with the energy carrying on throughout the fight.
From the opening bell, Voelker and DeMoney went right at one another. It was DeMoney who would score the first damaging shot—a brutal leg kick that hobbled Voelker.
Voelker, however, being the savage individual he is, bit down on his mouthpiece and continued to trade.
Entering the second round, DeMoney was visibly huffing and puffing with his mouth wide open. Midway through the round, Voelker swung the momentum onto his side, landing strike after strike to the head of DeMoney.
DeMoney crumpled to the floor, tapping out due to strikes, en route to Voelker’s 31st professional victory.
In the evening’s co-main event, lightweight professionals Deron Carlis and Garrett Wells laid It all on the line.
Kansas’s Carlis entered the bout looking to snap a four-fight losing streak. Wells, however, had other plans.
After dropping the first round to Carlis, Wells rallied in the second, securing a rear-naked choke. Carlis tapped with just 19 seconds left in the round, solidifying Well’s first professional victory.
On the amateur portion of the card, two titles were on the line in the bantamweight and welterweight divisions, respectively.
Fourteen-fight amateur fighter Travis Sumler captured the Shamrock FC Interim Bantamweight Championship, defeating Steve Barbee by split decision.
While the judges were split, the bout was fairly one-sided in Sumler’s favor. Sumler dominated Barbee on the ground, nearly securing submission after submission.
But Barbee hung tough, even using one arm (his second arm was trapped) to hand-fight a deep rear-naked choke attempt for over one minute at the end of Round 1.
When the final bell rang and the judges’ scorecards were read, Sumler left with the belt around his waist. If all goes well, he’ll meet champion Tim Jackson in a title unification bout later this year.
Earlier in the night, the ultra-experienced Devon Webber faced off against Spencer Cox for the 170-pound Shamrock FC title. Cox took the bout on short-notice, stepping in for the injured Nickolas Folken.
After a short period on the feet, the fight hit the mat, where Webber’s strength became the X-factor. Webber locked in a rear-naked choke and (in a rare move) climbed to mount.
From there, the choke became a wrenching neck crank. Cox had no choice but to tap out.
